Movie Review: Kaalakaandi

Kaalakaandi centers around three parallel stories: A man who discovers that he is suffering from stomach cancer and that his days are numbered, decides to go off his principles and live life, and by living life, he meant- trying hard drugs; an ambitious girl about to take her flight to the US gets involved in a hit-and-run case and seeks redemption and a duo of local level goons, who lack trust in each other but are dreaming big and planning to betray their boss together.

Written and directed by Akshat Verma, this highly underrated film stars some remarkable performers including Saif Ali Khan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal. Akshat, who is well known for his director debut Delhi Belly although, couldn’t surpass the level of humor and excellence of DB, but has still provided for the audience all the key ingredients for an ‘off-the-regular-track Bollywood entertainer’.

The film is refreshing and bizarre. The humor is edgy, hilarious and yet dark. It’s lovely to see how these largely disconnected stories end up tying in with tiny threads, over the course of a single night. The characters are quirky but real. The film touches upon several aspects like greed, love, mortality, and betrayal. Saif Ali Khan lets it all go- there is no fear of losing any image or any bars that prevent him to go as crazy as the film is. The film kicks start with an energetic vibe, but the energy couldn’t sustain till the end. The humor weakens by the end and the film starts relying on cheezy punchlines. Not everything added that neatly, as one would want but the film is surely a breath of fresh air and a marked departure from the formulaic Bollywood movies.

I rate this film, two and a half stars out of five
