Bollywood is filled with crappy love-stories and stuff. The majority of mainstream movies are all about romance. See, for example a movie like Love Aaj Kal (2020), or Marjaavan (2019), or even movies that have decent premise: take this film, Mohenjo Daro (2016). A film set in ancient history, showcasing the kind of lifestyle people had during the period of ancient civilisations. And yet, all they could come up in the name of plot was a dumb love-story. Like, after a point, it feels as if the film could have entirely been set up in the present times, and still it wouldn’t have impacted the plot at all. I would go on ranting but coming back to the point. Among all the nonsensical romantic dramas that Bollywood pours onto its audience every year, there are a few that stand out. Here is a list of five masala bollywood romantic movies that you might enjoy watching, or rewatching (if you’ve already seen them).
1. Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)

It’s directed by Maneesh Sharma, the man who has
directed films like Fan (2016) and Sui-Dhaaga (2018). Band Baaja Baaraat is the
story of two energetic youngsters from Delhi who decide to start a wedding
planning business. As their business flourishes, they find difficulty in
continuing the momentum as their personal relationships damage their
professional life. If you haven’t watched it in a recent while, you can
definitely give it a watch.
2. Tamasha (2015)

This Imtiaz Ali film is a love story at its core
but apart from that, it delves into some deep philosophical stuff. The idea of
the importance of storytelling. And how, a piece of fiction- basically a lie,
can be the best way to tell a truth. The film also talks about following your
dreams. Apart from that, it has a beautiful soundtrack and a charismatic cast
that never lets you lose interest in the characters.
3. Highway (2014)

Again, a film directed by Imtiaz Ali. The story
is about an elite girl, who is about to get married, gets kidnapped by a group
of goons and the girl later falls in love with the leader of the kidnappers. A
fairly simple story, but what adds real flavour to the film are the characters,
which have been crafted delicately. Not to mention, Alia Bhatt and Randeep
Hudda have given one of their best performances in this film.
4. Befikre (2016)

Befikre is directed by Aditya Chopra. The man
who directed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)- A movie that mainstreamed love
marriages during that period and which became a massive hit back then. With
Befikre, the director decides to reinvent his cinema to match the tastes of the
modern generation. In his quest of presenting the audience with a complex
relationship, he ends up making quite a messy second half. Can’t deny that the
first half works pretty well. And also, it’s fun to see Ranveer Singh going
full crazy and Vaani Kapoor too matches his pace quite nicely. You can give it
a watch for sure.
5. Tanu weds Manu Returns
(2015)
![]() |
Source: The Indian Express |
A Rom-com with witty humour directed by Anand L
Rai. Tanu and Manu are in a chaotic point in their relationship and as their
marriage shatters, Manu falls for a look alike of his spouse. It’s a sequel
that outshines its predecessor. Apart from a decent love story, the film works
as a hilarious comedy film as well. Kangana and Madhavan put out some nice
performances. The side-actors did pretty well with the little screen time they
had. Deepak Dobriyal and Jimmy Shergill’s performances stood out to me. The
film is way too hilarious, you should give it a watch for a change in
mood.
Hope you found some good movie suggestions in
here. Do tell us, what are your favourite mainstream Romantic bollywood films.
